Usually performed using a transvaginal probe, the scan confirms gestational sac location, detects fetal heart activity, calculates gestational age, and estimates the due date. Uterine and ovarian structures are evaluated, and parents receive a written report with an initial ultrasound image. Scheduled following a missed period and positive pregnancy test (ideally between weeks 6 and 10), or urgently in cases of pain or bleeding. Emptying the bladder prior to a transvaginal ultrasound is recommended.
