Collected during a speculum examination, the sample is sent for laboratory culture and antibiotic susceptibility testing (antibiogram) to guide targeted treatment. Indicated for increased vaginal discharge, pelvic discomfort, or as routine pre-procedural screening prior to gynecological surgery, IUD placement, or fertility treatments. Swabs are not collected during active menstruation; sexual intercourse, douching, and vaginal medications should be avoided 24 to 48 hours prior.
